What Is SOCSO (PERKESO)?
SOCSO, officially known as PERKESO (Pertubuhan Keselamatan Sosial), is Malaysia's social security organisation established under the Employees' Social Security Act 1969. SOCSO provides social protection to employees through two main schemes: the Employment Injury Scheme and the Invalidity Pension Scheme.
The Employment Injury Scheme covers medical expenses, temporary disablement benefits, and permanent disablement benefits if you are injured or become ill as a result of your work. This includes workplace accidents, occupational diseases, and work-related injuries during official duties. Medical treatment at SOCSO-panel clinics and hospitals is fully covered.
The Invalidity Pension Scheme provides a monthly pension if you are permanently disabled and unable to work in any occupation. To be eligible, you must have contributed to SOCSO for at least 12 months before the disablement occurred. The pension amount depends on your contribution period and average salary.
SOCSO contributions are mandatory for all Malaysian citizens and permanent residents earning RM30 or more per month. Foreign workers have separate contribution categories under SOCSO. The contribution rates are relatively low — employees pay just 0.5% of wages — but the protection they provide is invaluable, particularly for workers in high-risk industries.
SOCSO Contribution Rates and Wages Cap
SOCSO contributions are calculated as a percentage of your monthly wages, subject to a wage ceiling of RM5,000. This means that if your salary is RM5,000 or above, your SOCSO contribution is based on RM5,000, not your actual salary.
**Employee Rate:** 0.5% of wages (capped at RM5,000) = maximum RM25 per month **Employer Rate:** 2.05% of wages (capped at RM5,000) = maximum RM102.50 per month **Total:** 2.55% (maximum RM127.50 per month)
For example, if your monthly salary is RM3,000, your SOCSO deduction is RM15 (0.5% x RM3,000). If your salary is RM8,000, your SOCSO deduction is still RM25 because it is capped at RM5,000 of wages.
The RM5,000 wage ceiling means that higher-income earners pay the same maximum SOCSO contribution regardless of their actual salary. However, benefits such as medical treatment and disablement payments are not capped — you receive full coverage regardless of how much you contribute.
SOCSO contributions are due by the 15th of the following month. Employers are responsible for deducting the employee's share and adding their own contribution before submitting the total to PERKESO.
What SOCSO Covers and Why It Matters
SOCSO provides essential protection that every Malaysian employee should understand. The Employment Injury Scheme covers you for:
1. **Medical Benefits:** Free medical treatment at SOCSO-panel clinics and government hospitals for work-related injuries and occupational diseases. This includes outpatient treatment, hospitalisation, surgery, and rehabilitation.
2. **Temporary Disablement Benefit:** 80% of your average daily wage if you are temporarily unable to work due to a work injury. This benefit is paid for the duration of your disablement, up to a maximum period.
3. **Permanent Disablement Benefit:** A lump sum or monthly pension if you suffer permanent loss of function due to a workplace injury. The amount depends on the degree of disablement assessed by a medical board.
4. **Dependents' Benefit:** Monthly pension paid to your dependents if you die as a result of a work-related injury or occupational disease.
The Invalidity Pension Scheme provides a monthly pension if you become permanently disabled and cannot work in any occupation. The pension starts after a 12-month qualifying contribution period.
For employees in construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and other high-risk industries, SOCSO coverage is particularly important. A workplace accident can happen to anyone, and without SOCSO, you would face significant medical expenses and loss of income during recovery.
